Before anything else, a special note:
If you are not currently reading/have not ever read a copy of The Lifted Brow, then we strongly encourage you seek out an issue, read our online content, and immerse yourself in the writing.
This is particularly helpful if you want to be published in the magazine as it lets you know the type of content we want to, and are, publishing!
So, grab a copy and we'll post it straight to you, or even subscribe, and do us the favour of supporting the magazine. We want you as a reader first, and as a contributor second, because that is such a beautiful transition.
Okay, some official guidelines:
In The Lifted Brow we tend to publish fiction that is 'new' in some way, whether it be different, original, experimental in respect to form, or viewpoint, or style, or voice, or plot, or language — or any combo of all the above. What does ‘new’ mean? We don’t know. We want you to show us.
You’re blending genres? Great! You're attempting something a little odd, or untried, or really quite difficult — that's fine! Please send us your most ambitious work; we are forever eager to be convinced. The point being, if you're not trying to be new/different/innovative/challenging, your piece of fiction probably isn't for us.
We want fiction that is brazen and alive. We want fiction that rearranges something in our heads; that immerses us in a new world. We want fiction that challenges our idea of what fiction can be.
We particularly encourage writers who are queer and/or trans and/or of any colour, religion, gender, and/or have a disability, and/or are rad and excellent and canny, to send us work. New and different perspectives are the ethic of great fiction and we’re in the business of great fiction.
If you’re writing very short short stories — stories under 100 words — please send ten to twenty at once, in a single document. We also love love love long fiction — 5,000 words and above. Even 10,000! What we're trying to say is that any and every size is okay by us.
Online submissions only. No hard copies. Please only submit one piece at a time.
We accept unpublished work only. Previously published, prize-winning, or broadcast work will not be accepted. (Previous online posting generally constitutes prior publication.)
This particular submissions window closes midnight AEST on Friday 26 October. Right now we are looking for fiction from both Australian and international writers. Please note that work submitted will be under consideration for the first issue of 2019.
We pay contributors.
